Five ideas for festive fun in Glasgow this Christmas

Christmas is coming… and Glasgow wouldn’t be Glasgow if it didn’t celebrate in style. So, whether you’re hosting guests, visiting, or just looking for what’s on offer in December, here are our top five things to do in Glasgow in the run up to the 25th.

Spin the wheel

George Square is home to The Big Wheel – a stunning festive sight that’s nearly 130 feet high. A great way to see the city centre from a whole new angle. It’s open from 10am to 10pm from 25th November to the 29th December, so head along for a spin (don’t worry, it’s not fast), and enjoy the carousel and other attractions at the same time. If you’re scared of heights, remember, it looks good from the ground too!

Shop till you drop

Glasgow is brilliant for shopping at any time of the year – but at Christmas time it really comes into its own. We challenge you not to find a gift for everyone in your family in the buzzing retail area of the city… For the fashion-conscious amongst you, there’s Glasgow’s ‘Style Mile’ – the square in the centre of the city that’s home to the best shopping in the UK outside London. Many shops are open until 7pm every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, while on a Thursday you can shop until 8pm, or even later during the countdown to Christmas. Our tip: find out about gift wrapping services, happening in many stores.

Off to market

These days, city shopping in December is all about Christmas markets. And because Glasgow doesn’t do things by half, the city has not one – but two! Head to George Square (25th November to 29th December 10am-10pm) and St Enoch Square (from 9th November to 22nd December 10am-10pm) for traditional European-style markets packed with delicious festive fare, original gifts and even a warm mulled wine to keep you feeling toasty while you shop. For the kids, there’s plenty of street entertainment to stop them getting bored.

It’s show time!

Once you’ve done the fairs and markets, it’s time for some warmer indoor entertainment – in the shape of a great selection of pantos and festive shows. Head to the King’s Theatre (2nd December to 7th January) for Sleeping Beauty, a classic panto with a great line-up of Scottish names including Elaine C Smith, Johnny Mac, Juliet Cadzow and Paul-James Corrigan from River City. At the Citizens Theatre (28th November to 31st December) is Cinderella, or head to the SEC Armadillo (16th December to 7th January) for Jack and the Beanstalk. Not a panto person? Check out Tinsel Toon, Tron Theatre Company’s festive show for children, suitable for ages 3 to 6 years (30th November 2017 to 31st December 2017).

Here comes Santa Claus

A great way to get into the spirit of giving at Christmas is by joining Glasgow’s annual 5K Santa Dash. Since the event began 11 years ago, it’s raised over £200,000 for good causes. This year, on 10th December (9.30am start), thousands of Santas can be seen running through the city streets to raise money for charity. This year, the cause is Beatson Cancer Charity and the event is expected to attract over 7.5K runners. Are you game? Get that white beard in place and on your marks, get set… go!
